At one level, virtually everyone is interested in health information. If they are injured, become ill, or are diagnosed as having a serious disease, the salience of health information may increase sharply. On any given day, however, most people are not ill or injured and generally feel in good health, and it is the salience of health information to this group that governs, in part, short-term patterns of information acquisition and retention. Parrott (1995) suggests that exposure to a health message is not adequate; people are exposed to health messages on a regular basis.

The Hazards of Simple Cross-Tabulations The results of this model provide a sharp contrast with the conclusions that we might have made on the basis of the simple cross-tabulations (expressed as bar charts) in Figure 3-4. Because the vast majority of health information is presented in this bivariate format, it is worthwhile to point to the level of misinformation often conveyed by simple bar charts. The bar charts in Figure 3-4 indicate that approximately 72 percent of individuals with a family member with a chronic illness were very interested in health information in 1993, compared to 62 percent of respondents without a family member with a chronic illness.

The level of educational attainment and the number of college-level science courses completed remain the major predictors of biomedical literacy for both men and women. Age is a slightly more important factor among women than men, and reading the news regularly is a more positive influence on biomedical literacy among men and women.
