Anna had links to the musical and MARTHA GRAHAM artha Graham, often referred to as the “mother of modern M dance,” believed she had answered a higher calling in her career. Her impassioned mission, she believed, was to map out the path of the heart through movement. “That driving force of God that plunges through me is what I live for,” she once wrote. (Long, 56) By making a complete departure from the movements and styles of classical ballet through her own groundbreaking ideas of dance, Graham created a whole new art form.

In those days, families discouraged marrying outside one’s faith. In some Jewish families, a child who married a non-Jew was disowned. Beatrice was not deterred by the possibility, though. She and Henry were married in 1876. She even converted to his religion, solidifying her commitment. Henry and Beatrice set up their home in Manhattan and had two sons, William Churchill (1878) and Cecil Blount (1881) de Mille. Splitting his time between teaching and writing, Henry wrote amateur plays and sometimes filled in as a reader for the Madison Square Theater.

Her father, Sylvester Samuel, a German Jewish businessman, came to America from England in 1871 with his Eastern European wife, Cecilia. They settled in Brooklyn, New York. Beatrice Samuel gravitated toward the arts, developing a particularly strong passion for the theater. While attending a meeting at a local music and literary society, Beatrice met Henry de Mille. He, too, loved the theater; he had even written his first play while a teenager. Henry had wanted to pursue a career as a playwright, but his parents had sent him to Columbia College to study theology.
