Furthermore, all three relations can occur simultaneously, as in Sunjata. The many versions available (1) feature songs of griots and wise sayings; (2) embody a folktale type of the boy’s success story, about a marginalized mother–son dyad and its rise to power; and (3) contain frequent formulaic praises of the hero as founder of the kingdom of Mali (and of his griot as ancestor of modern singers). Perhaps, indeed, we should define epic as that form that consistently represents all three of the above relations.

The prefix ‘‘proto-’’ (Greek ‘‘first’’) conveys the fact that the language in question – the source, which does indeed no longer exist – is not actually attested in any documents but has rather to be inferred from the existence of its children (conventionally ‘‘daughters’’). These so-called Indo-European languages, among which is numbered English, have a tremendous geographical and temporal range: even before the recent spread of English to the United States, Australia, and virtually every corner of the globe, Indo-European languages spanned the northern half of the Indian subcontinent and all the way to Ireland and Iceland in westernmost Europe; our earliest records date to the middle of the second millennium B C E , and there are, of course, numerous Indo-European languages alive and well today, including all those modern languages of India (such as Hindi) that have developed from Sanskrit, modern Greek, and the Romance languages, which are Latin’s legacy.

All reputable linguists who reconstruct proto-languages rely first and foremost on a technique known as the Comparative Method (the classic exposition is Meillet 1925/ 1967). This simple procedure for determining linguistic relatedness remains, after nearly two centuries, the most consistently validated theory of language ever put forward. , drain, drake, and drill) come to be uttered in the new, and newly correct, way.
